Strong Natural Gas Odors Reported

PG&E has determined that natural gas imported into our system was over
odorized and is currently in our pipelines, moving southward through
many parts of northern California, including the Sacramento Valley,
Solano County, Sonoma County, Stanislaus County, the North and East
Bay areas, and the San Joaquin Valley as far south as Modesto.

A strong odor is being reported in many of these areas. PG&E believes
it is due to the high amount of odorant in the gas in our transmission
system.

The situation is safe and the smell from the extra odorant is expected
to dissipate by early Friday.

PG&E could experience increased call volume and customers’ extended
wait times as a result of the situation.

Key Points:
• The situation is safe. The odor will dissipate safely into the atmosphere.
• We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused area residents.
• If the odor persists, you should call back PG&E.
• Mercaptin, which has a sulfur-like, "rotten egg" smell, is used as a
safe odorant for the naturally odorless gas to aid in detection.
