The source for the list of broadband projects released by the office of the Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing (BTH) is a mystery. Looking at the numbers I would pose that the numbers on the list are in thousands (i.e. $50 million for Humboldt county-although I do not know where that number came from or what project that is)
There are a series of projects currently being proposed for the redwood region (Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino) totaling over $100 million including last mile connections for unserved and underserved communities, middle mile to increase backhaul capacity and improve route diversity, and systems to improve the interconnection of regional safety providers. How many of those projects realistically stand a chance at funding from the Broadband Economic Stimulus funding remains to be seen-sorting through the rules recently released is challenging. For a copy of the Notice of Available Funding (NOFA) http://broadbandusa.sc.egov.usda.gov/files/BB%20NOFA%20FINAL%20with%20disclaimer_1.pdf
In the meantime, I am working to get continuity in communication between (BTH) and the governor's office of the CIO (which is where we, as a region, have been in close communication.) There is enough confusion around the current funding opportunities at the federal level, we desperately need clarity at the state level.
