I could be wrong about the follow.

Normal email SMTP is sent via port 25 outbound.  Port 25 outbound is
often blocked for residential internet customers as an anti-spam
measure.

Authenticated mail injection (the first hop of sending email) happens
on a different port (perhaps 487?, 587? - not totally sure).  It also
supports logging in with a username and password prior to handing the
email message to the mail server.  The fact that it uses a different
port could be what allows it to operate.
