What is the Humboldt Solar Neighbors Tour?
The Humboldt Solar Neighbors Tour will occur on Saturday, October 4, 2008, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in communities throughout northern Humboldt County.
The Solar Neighbors Tour is a grassroots effort of local homeowners, businesses and organizations who are interested in developing a sustainable energy future for Humboldt County, and who believe that solar energy can play a part in achieving that vision.
Humboldt County is a leader in energy efficiency and the use of solar energy, and has a per-capita solar photovoltaic installation rate over three times that of the rest of northern California, with hundreds of successful installations so far!
The Humboldt Solar Neighbors Tour is a celebration of this accomplishment, and an opportunity for these early adopters of solar technology to share their experiences with their neighbors.
The Tour provides an opportunity for you to see the latest in solar technology, and talk to others about their first-hand experience using solar energy. This year 80 local homes, businesses and institutions are participating in the tour.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
What will I see on the Tour?
You will see a variety of solar applications on residences, businesses and public buildings. These technologies include: grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems for producing electricity, solar water heading for domestic and space heating needs, energy efficiency and passive solar techniques, day lighting, and more.
Perhaps more valuable than simply seeing the solar applications will be the opportunity to talk with your neighbors about their solar experiences. Be sure to ask them about:
. Why they decided to "go solar"
. How they selected a contractor (if they used one)
. Design considerations from a consumer perspective
. System costs and benefits
. The California Solar Initiative rebate and incentive process
. Net metering, and what's needed to get "grid-connected" with PG&E
A complete Tour Guide will be available in the North Coast Journal and Arcata Eye the week preceeding the Tour. To donwload a low-res version of the Tour Guide (PDF, 3.8 MB) [click here]

How much does it cost, and how do I participate?
