You may recall I am representing RTC on the North Coast Schools to
Careers Committee. Several of you responded when I asked for input
regarding your perspective on how students should be prepared for
entering the work force. Thank you for that. Your responses were passed
on to the committee.
The last meeting at the end of September was one of reforming and
reorganizing for the committee. It was attended by representatives from
several school districts, CR, HSU and business. A great discussion was
held and many decisions were made regarding the direction of the Committee.
The Committee meets again tonight (sorry for the late notice). Again,
if you have anything you would like me share with the Committee please
let me know. Below are the main topics that will be considered:
This will be an important continuance of the first meeting as we will be
discussing the following goals and objectives for the group:
3.1 Research local employers' priorities on which hard and soft
skills they would like educators to focus their efforts.
3.1a. Inform educators of that research;
3.1b. Reach out to the business/labor communities to consult with
them on what skills - hard and soft - they would like to see taught in
the relevant technical programs.
3.2 Create internship programs
3.3 Grant CR credit to high school students through use of
articulation agreements and programs of study
3.4 Develop and execute a marketing plan to increase student
inflow into STC pathways.
3.5 Benchmark the North Coast's current STC outcomes to rest of state
3.6 Develop a centralized clearing house for training programs
utilizing the state's 15 industry sectors and the Targets/Occupations of
Opportunity economic data. (Or, ensure that www.capathways.org has all
the information we think it should).
3.7 Keep attendance at NCSTCC meetings high and have
representatives from all sectors present
3.8 Decide whether or not we will be an advisory or
action-oriented Consortium
3.9 Acquire the resources to achieve goals.
3.10 How can participation of Tech Prep help achieve these goals and
objectives?
