RURAL GATEWAY PEER-TO-PEER CONFERENCE CALL:
TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN RURAL AMERICA
THURSDAY, February 28, 2008
2:00 p.m. -3:30 p.m. EST
The Office of Rural Housing and Economic Development (ORHED) invites you to
take part in our next peer-to-peer conference call. Scheduled for Thursday,
February 28, 2008, this call will offer participants the opportunity to
learn about the current issues related to technology in rural communities,
the benefits of telecommunication infrastructure, and funding available to
expand telecommunication services.
Leaders of nonprofit housing and economic development organizations serving
rural communities will have an opportunity to discuss and share issues
related to expanding technology in their communities, the advantages of
having telecommunication in their areas, and funding challenges.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about best
practices, discuss the pros and cons of telecommunications, and establish
contacts for future reference.
Join Otto V. Banks, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Development,
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as we engage rural
community leaders in this telecommunication forum. The director of the
telecommunications program at the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA), Kenneth Kuchno and colleague Farwa Naqui will serve as the primary
speakers for the call.
Topics to be discussed
* Types of telecommunication for rural areas
* Benefits of telecommunication infrastructure
* Sources of funding for expanding telecommunication services
* Best practices and lessons-learned
Format of the call:
Call-in instructions and additional materials will be emailed to
participants on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. The call will consist of a 60
minute presentation by Kenneth Kuchno. A Q&A session will follow.
