Peter,

I definitely agree that out-of-the-area data centers have their place. I'm
actually in the middle of working for a client who will be installing
redundant servers on every continent. Price in not an issue to them.
Dominating markets on all respective parts of the world is though.

For local businesses that do things like sell or manage high-capacity
multimedia (The Stream Guys spring to mind), basing such a project locally
would clearly put them at a competitive disadvantage with similar
companies. At the moment, they have no choice but to depend upon services
that are based out of the area. I hope that changes in the not-too-distant
future though.
