[RTC List] Take a byte out of your emails

I must say it is fun to wake up the day after Christmas and read these
entertaining flames and misunderstandings and misconceptions and
whatnot. I do have a thought concerning them, however...

I know this request may seem redundant because it's been made many, many
(read that as: many) times in the past (I remember making it 12 years
ago): can you trim your replies down to just the pertinent data that is
under discussion in any given email? I subscribe to the digest version
of this mailing list, so to read Cole's and Van's entertaining discourse
I have to scroll through 58KB of mostly repeated information to really
pull out the juicy stuff. When you (all of us) compose a reply, can you
(we) strip out the superfluous information and just cut to the chase
with these discussions? Things move much more quickly that way and
voyeurs like myself can glean the gist of an entire discussion before
our own desire to chime in gets the better of us.

Cole: are you perhaps confusing and meshing two entirely separate issues
with your rather copious complaints? Hosting and connections to the
Internet beyond the borders of Humboldt are different issues. Perhaps
before you dis local hosting companies (of which there are several
reliable options from which to choose) or spread rumors about their
unreliability you should clarify what your real complaints involve. In
this case it seems to me you are complaining about Humboldt's isolation,
not hosting options.

I am confused, furthermore, by your reference to a "small local hosting
company" based in Seattle. By definition - since this list serves
Humboldt County and surrounding environs - that would not be considered
"local". Maybe to Seattle residents, but then this would be a topic of
discussion for one of "their" local listservs, not ours. Perhaps in the
interests of supporting (the mindset that supports) the local economy
you could rephrase your concerns to say something like "Due to
connectivity issues imposed by geography, we've had to take our hosting
out of the County." If it is a real and legitimate complaint that you
have about a local business, slamming it (by name or implication) is not
something we do on public discussion boards. That is one of the purposes
for the Better Business Bureau.
