Just a note: The One-Laptop-Per-Child computer (called the XO ) is again
available in the give-one-get-one program for $400. You can also just
give one to a child in a developing nation for $199 - and can donate 100
of them to any school anywhere in a program they have just started.
All information is at
http://laptop.org/en/?gclid=CLbKxbyqqpcCFRwwawodzwjejQ
(or google OLPC anytime)
...and a couple of additional points:
Some advantages of the XO:
-probably the most rugged, weather-resistant inexpensive mini around
-best wifi reception!; tablet-style capable; 3 USB ports, camera etc.
-works in full sunlight (even runs on .8 Watts with backlight off! yes .8)
-you can let children use it (expect to learn things from them)
-free software; the XO is devoted to open source and uses Linux
Some disadvantages:
-child-size keyboard (a $15 full-sized keyboard plugs into a USB port)
-doesn't play videos as well as PCs etc.
-you will be noticed resulting in fun and interesting conversations with
very nice people.
It is not a PC running XP but I have found it very handy for Internet
activity and durability. I have an extra donated XO that I am willing to
pass around to RTC members for them to try out and play with. I can set
this up through the Humboldt Area Foundation or Access Humboldt for
check-out if there is interest. Also, please also feel free to call me at
442-3849.
I may be setting up a meeting in the next few months for anyone interested
in the XO and the mission of putting this kind of computer into the hands
of every child going into the first grade - especially in the developing
world and some of the poorer areas of our region.
Happy Holidays,
Jan
